Winter tires, folks. Seriously. I was having issues last night WITH them. A friend without them on the same route was very nearly stuffed. With them, you can at least concentrate on what going on around you and anticipating rather than concentrating on the basics of just remaining in control.

Oh, and slow down. I am the guy on here that says you don’t need to go desperately slow in snow, it’s visible and predictable and has traction of >0. So listen to me when I say that. ESPECIALLY when there’s no snow on top of it yet. The light pellet-y snow we got later helped immensely. The traction before... well, let’s give an example...

I know that when I spin my tires, the back steps out to the right. And I know that even in snow I have to consciously try and break loose if I’m already rolling at say 20-30kph. Last night I could break loose at 40+ with little to no effort, and there wasn’t even enough traction to make the back step out the way it usually does. (**I tested this deliberately on an empty stretch to find my limits. Not playing. Ice ain’t fun unless you’re on skates.**)

Well in this case it’s freezing rain and black ice... notice how the road is shiny?

I’m all for natural selection, provided it doesn’t affect the innocent. Sadly it almost always does.

Yes. Which looks just wet... but you should know that it’s more than that within a few seconds of driving on it. Slow the hell down and next time have a set of fing winter tires. And still slow down.

There isn’t much that get’s to me, weather-wise, on the roads... rain? Meh. Ain’t care. Not happy, but whatev. Fog? I actually love fog. Snow? GIB MORE. Slush? Sketchy at times, but with a little extra care there ain’t no issues. Ice... terrifies me. There’s literally nothing you can do. No defence. Snow helps... if you know what’s underneath. You can feel it, but for some reason people don’t pick up on the not-so-subtle hints. Salt, given time, is the solution... but you can never be sure. You can have rock-solid traction along with patches of sheer ice. Which can be worse than constant ice, and will also be wet. And you’ll never know until it bites you.

Point being those few seconds are enough to spin most morons on the road around, especially those with their fancy leased AWD luxury cars.

Saw that the other day... not the actual event, but it was pretty close in front. Roads weren’t actually that bad at all. Dusting of snow, slight slush buildup between lanes. Brand new XT5 passes us, a little while later we see taillight shards and tire marks on the center divider and he’s nose down in the ditch on the right. Figure he tried a sudden lane change and the slush spooked him.

Morons... morons everywhere...
